Why is it that children seem to inherit the skills of the famous Harry Houdini? A few seconds away from your gaze and you realize that they have performed their disappearing act. No wonder some parents resort to putting their children on leashes when they go out. They are not exactly the ones we normally use on our pets. Try tying the leash on your kid’s neck and you’ll have the social welfare banging on your door. There are actually those that are attached to a child’s wrist to ensure that he doesn’t get too far away from mommy.

Still, there are parents who think that leashes, regardless where it is attached, sound barbaric. These aren’t really designed to trample on human rights, but are just created to lessen the incidence of your child getting lost or abducted.

Places that are crowded such as parks, shopping centers, zoos, airports, sports venues and the like are the possible settings that your child could get lost in. If you are in the company of more than one child, it is not convenient to use the child leash. Unless you want to get all tangled holding on to those leashes, it would be more advisable to use the child safety wristbands. These do not limit the distance that your child can wander off from you but these can reunite you with them a lot faster in case they are lost.

Child safety wristbands, which mostly come in very bright colors, are more than just a fashion statement. These are actually a part of some safety initiatives to assist parents who have lost their children in crowded places. These child safety wristbands contain the parents’ contact number. This information is essential so that you can be contacted once someone finds your child.

The child safety wristbands are basically the simplest and easiest to use among all child safety gadgets, yet one of the most effective. You don’t have to hold on to your child’s hand all the time while you are in a place swarming with people. Just be sure to educate your child on what to do in case he doesn’t see you anywhere near him. Make sure that he knows where to go and who to ask help from in case he feels that he is lost.

The child safety wristbands do not totally eliminate the possibility of an abduction or other potential dangers. But they are a faster and less stressful way of being reunited with your “lost” child once again. The responsibility of ensuring your reunion with your child does not start and end with the child safety wristbands. It is your crucial role to educate your child on how to make the wristbands work best for him.

Are you having a hard time figuring out how to make your home as safe as it can be for your child? Do you see yourself making major changes in the house to ensure a child-friendly environment?

Before you make any more unnecessary changes in your house, you might be better off acquiring the help of child safety consultants. These people are capable of creating a safe home for you, your children, and even your pets. They have the extensive knowledge on the potential hazards that are common in homes. Parents will also be provided with information on the risks that they might have otherwise missed knowing. The child safety consultants do not just point out the dangers present in your home, but are experts in creating safety plans as well.

Most parents do not know that there are actually people who can help them make their homes as safe as they want them to be. Some of those parents who have been doing the childproofing themselves, often end up with child safety products and equipment that are practically useless or unnecessary. Child safety consultants get rid of this problem. They are the most reliable people to ask about the hazards in the house and the possible ways to eliminate them. You are not left with the guesswork on how to keep you little one off the stairs or how to stop him from putting his hand in the oven.

Child safety consultants do not create a 100% child safe house. They do not guarantee to keep your kid from having tumbles and falls, but they do lessen the level of “danger” that your kid might get into.

Child safety consultants work by surveying your home. They have to know every nook and corner of the house and would need to go through every room so as to come up with a thorough child proofing plan. Parents should be prepared to be asked questions regarding their lifestyle so that the plan that the child safety consultants produce would fit well into their lives.

Parents can set their budget, although if you’re thinking of maxing out their services, you would leave it up to them to provide you with the plan and the estimate of the costs. The child safety consultants can also help parents acquire the most affordable and the most reliable child safety products in the market. Most of them even offer initial consultation services free of charge.

Child safety consultants are hired by parents whose main concern is the safety of their children. There are parents who’d rather create the childproofing plan and execute it themselves. However, with the children’s safety as the main issue, why compromise?

Car rides need not be a frightening experience for children. The child safety LATCH system reduces the risks of injury caused by car accidents. This system has been found out to eradicate about 50% of the improper installation associated with child safety car seats.

It is ironic to know that while child safety car seats are aimed at keeping the child safe while riding in a vehicle, a good 80% of them are installed incorrectly. This totally defeats the purpose of this safety equipment. One of the main reasons for this is the incompatibility of some vehicles to the child safety seats. This difficulty of setting up the child safety car seat has paved the way for the more effective child safety LATCH system. The Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) system is a much easier way of installing the child safety seats in the vehicle because it eliminates the use of the vehicle’s seat belt system. The rise in the properly installed child safety car seats will lessen the number of car accident related injuries and deaths.

The child safety LATCH system does not require parents to buy another child safety car seat. The system also does not claim to work better than the one that attaches the child safety seat to the vehicle’s seat belt. However, the child safety LATCH system is undoubtedly an easier and a more secure way of setting up a child car seat.

Some parents wonder if they can use both methods in installing their child safety seat. Well-intentioned parents may only be after their children’s protection, but using the seat belt and the child safety LATCH system at the same time is not possible. If parents want to make sure their child is secure once inside the car, they have to choose which method provides the best fit. If they are having a hard time installing the car seat with the car’s seat belt, chances are, it doesn’t give them the best assurance that their children is safe.

Child safety seats that are not manufactured according to the child safety LATCH system may still be used in LATCH-equipped vehicles by attaching it to the vehicle’s seat belts. But if you insist on getting those LATCH-equipped car safety seats, make sure that you try installing it in your vehicle to see if your find it easier to set up than your old one.

The child safety LATCH system does not recommend any specific brand of child safety car seat, nor does it demand you to get a LATCH-equipped seat in place of your old one. The system is merely designed as an alternative for those parents who are thinking of their children’s welfare but are having problems with the old seat belt method.

Airbags are deemed important for preventing injuries and deaths in car crashes. Yes, that’s what most surveys have noted. It was in fact reported by recent researches that airbags save more than 1,500 lives per year. That may seem amazing in the first place, but just like any thing in the world, airbags have their own disadvantages. Although it is highly beneficial for reducing the chances of injury for adults in a crash, the force of an airbag when deployed can injure the small children seriously and severely.

Well, the real reason for its being injurious to toddlers is that when deployed, the airbags have the tendency to inflate faster than the blink of an eye. They tend to explode out of the dashboard and side panels of the car to protect the driver and the front seat passenger from hitting hard surfaces during a crash. But imagine that same force hitting a small child in the front seat of the car. As you may realize, that’s too dangerous for them. It is basically for this reason that certain child safety airbag tips are considered.

Now if you want to know exactly how to protect your small children from the injurious force of deployed airbags, I recommend you to read on. I have given below a few child safety airbag tips for you to consider. Just note all these child safety airbag tips and make sure to apply these tips if possible.

* Children under the age of 12, including newborns, should ride in the rear seat, buckled up comfortably. For further security, parents are advised to use child safety seats, booster seats or safety belts that fit well to them.

* To ensure that the child safety airbag will not hit your child so badly, place your infants in a rear facing child seat and fasten securely in the back seat of the car. Note that the perfect place for children is the back seat.

The Internet is a great resource for kids, offering both entertainment and knowledge. The different ways and places kids can go online is increasing rapidly, cafes, schools, phones, PDA’s all offer portals to the online world. Just as in the real world, the virtual world poses dangers to your kids. While very much hyped by media, the dangers for kids online are none the less real. Although ISP’s and governments strive to provide a safe enjoyable online experience, it’s impossible to guarantee this. Just as in the real world there is no substitute for parents supervising and educating their children, encouraging safe online practices.

How Can Parents Protect Their Children Online?

Children need a certain amount of privacy in the real world, the also need parental involvement and guidance. The balance you strike in the real world should be what you strive to achieve in their online life also. Just as you would in normal activities, if you’re concerned about their online activities talk to them. Become involved in their online life in the same way you do with other things they do.

Don’t wait until you think there is a problem, your involvement could actually avoid any problems. Many parents shy away from this, after all some have no idea about the online world. If your unsure, speak to your childes teacher, ask a trusted Internet savvy friend. If your child tells you about an upsetting message, web-site or person online, offer advice on how to avoid this in the future. Most importantly the way you react will determine if they come to you in the future with similar problems.

Some ISP’s offer Internet filtering that removes some pornography and other content not suitable for kids. You can also buy filters for your computers at home. By installing the filters on your on PCs, you have far greater control over your child’s activities. After all would you let the electricity company decide if your children can watch a movie or not? It makes sense you maintain that control. Filters however are not perfect, some sites will get through, administrators of these sites spend their time finding ways around the filters, so do your kids. In addition to an Internet filter, you should filter you e-mail for spam. Much spam has an adult subject so is a source of material kids should not be reading. While filters are a valuable tool, they are no substitute for supervision, the Internet is not a TV or video game, don’t treat it like a nanny.

Set Rules The Whole Family Follows Online

The types of rules you should set are in reality the same basic rules you should maintain for your own security.

Never give out identifying information in chat rooms, news groups and forums. Many people other than the intended recipient could read the information. Teach your children to think carefully before giving information such as name, age, phone number, school, financial details etc.

Never give personal information in e-mails unless they’re sure they know and trust the recipient.

When joining social networking sites such as Myspace, Facebook, or opening instant messenger accounts such as MSN or Yahoo Messenger, use a pseudonym.

If your child opens an online e-mail account, don’t let them place their account in the public directory (if the site has one).

Avoid listing your name, or your child’s name in any public directories and profiles.

Insist your child has your permission to meet anyone in person they know from the Internet, and never allow them to meet anyone alone. Always ensure there is a trusted adult there and the meeting is in a public place.

Don’t allow your child to respond to obscene, suggestive, abusive, or threatening messages. If your child receives such messages forward them to your ISP and ask for help.

Never click links or open attachments in an e-mail from someone your don’t know. Such links and attachments can contain viruses, possibly with the aim of stealing personal information.

If your child is being subjected to cyber bullying, teach them to turn off their phone, block the perpetrators profile and ignore their messages. Often as in the real world, if the bully gets no response/reaction they go away. Also make sure your child is not a cyber bully. Most social networking and instant massaging services have an abuse policy and method of reporting abuse, use it. Although abuse policies mainly deal with spam, they are increasing including anti-social behaviour in these policies.

Remember these are rules that the whole family should follow. They will provide the whole family with good personal online security.

The online world of chat rooms, web-sites, instant massaging and newsgroups etc offer both children and adults valuable opportunities for peer socialization and knowledge. With common sense rules, and communication, you can help your child avoid unpleasant and dangerous situations in their online activities.

Setting up internet safety rules, no matter how old your child is, can be a good step for your child when online.

Whether it’s a school project, emailing friends or poking around a chat room, children on the Internet go many places. Internet safety rules for going those places and doing certain activities can help keep them safer.

What would some of these internet safety rules be? First, let your child know that they should never give out their personal information online. There is absolutely no reason why they should give anyone their address or phone number online. Make sure that your child knows that just because the person they are talking to online claims to be a 16 year old boy or girl, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are.

Two, it is also important to prevent your child from posting personal pictures or videos of themselves online. However, this is something that many children do. Make sure they are portrait type photos, those that show head and shoulders only. If your child wants to post pictures or videos online, be sure to at least review them yourself first.

Three, make sure your child knows that they are not allowed to meet, in person, with anyone who they meet online. This is important, as this is how many children and teenagers fall victim to internet predators and sexual predators. Yes, the person who they are talking to on the computer may be who they say they are, but are you willing to take that chance? If an in person meeting does take place and you know about it, attend with your child. Let multiple people know where you are going and who you are meeting with. Be sure to do so in a public place.

Four, set rules for your child on their use of internet chat rooms and social networking websites. For starters, if you don’t want your child to use these things, don’t let them. If you do, sit with them when they first sign up and negotiate the site yourself. Then set time limits they can be inside these rooms. For example, make sure you are in the room if your child is using an internet chat room.

Five and finally, make sure that your child knows that all of the internet safety rules you set concerning internet use apply to all computer use, not just on the computer at home.

It’s a fact that many parents today are blocking websites from their children’s access, mainly to protect the children from adult websites and online predators. Most parents agree that blocking certain websites from their children’s view is a good thing, and many tools now exist to help parents with this daunting task.

Blocking Websites – The “Why”

Why do parents feel the need to block certain websites from their child’s view? It’s no secret that “adult” websites are among the fastest growing of the “online industries,” with literally millions of sites now available with this kind of content. And, it’s all too easy to accidentally click into to one of these adult sites. We’ve all done this, I’m sure, at least once, and the resulting images can be shocking and horrifying – something that children should never, ever see.

But there are other reasons for blocking websites, including the potential for exploitation by online predators. We’ve all read about the teen that was lured into an abusive situation by an online predator, lurking in chatrooms posing perhaps as another teen, who was able to meet with and assault this child – or even worse. Law enforcement is getting smarter prosecuting online crimes – officers now regularly pose as online teens who get “lured” into meeting with a potential pedophile, who discovers too late that the “victim” was an undercover policeman. But why would you, as a parent, want to even take the chance that your child could possibly be harmed by talking in “chatrooms?” Blocking these websites is the only sure way to prevent this kind of crime.

Blocking Websites – The “How To”

Parental controls on personal computers can be a godsend for parents. Newer computers with Windows Vista operating systems usually contain some sort of parental controls. Here are a few simple steps to access parental controls on a Vista system;

Click “Start/Control Panel/User Accounts”

Click on the tab labeled “set up parental controls for any user”

Under “Choose a user and set up parental controls,” click “What can I do with parental controls?”

The help screen will appear, explaining how the system works.

It’s as simple as that – for Vista! You can block certain websites, or sites with a particular content. You can also limit what programs your child can access or which games they are allowed to play. Time limits for internet access can be set – and reports can be generated showing everything your child does on that computer! Many options exist for protection through Vista, and the help screen, as shown above, is a great place to start.

Commercial Third-Party Internet Blocking

Many commercial third-party internet blocking software programs and systems are on the market today. This is great news for those who do not use Vista, or would like to take blocking websites to the next level.The best of the commercial internet blocking systems offer many configuration options such as;

Ability to block websites by keyword

Warning signs – how to recognize a pattern of unsafe behavior

How to avoid identity theft (yes – even stealing children’s identities!)

Block adware & spyware

Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA)

Social Networking Safety

These are just a few of the areas where parents need to offer online education and protection for their children.

Parents – Please Learn And Investigate For Your Child’s Safety

In reality, safety on the internet is like most anything else a good parent will want to provide for their children. You wouldn’t give your five year-old daughter the keys to the family car for a Sunday afternoon drive – would you? How about leaving your loaded handgun on your teenager’s nightstand? Responsible parents would not place their children in dangerous situations like these. Why then, would you expose your child to the very real dangers that are present on the internet today – without some sort of protection?

It isn’t difficult or time-consuming to become informed about internet safety for your children – do it today, and take action for your child’s sake.

Parental controls on personal computers can be a godsend for parents. Newer computers with Windows Vista operating systems usually contain some sort of parental controls. Here are a few simple steps to access parental controls on a Vista system;

Many commercial third-party internet blocking software programs and systems are on the market today. This is great news for those who do not use Vista, or would like to take blocking websites to the next level.The best of the commercial internet blocking systems offer many configuration options such as;

Ability to block websites by keyword

Warning signs – how to recognize a pattern of unsafe behavior

How to avoid identity theft (yes – even stealing children’s identities!)

Block adware & spyware

Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA)

Social Networking Safety

These are just a few of the areas where parents need to offer online education and protection for their children.
